CHAPTER 14: KAT

Knowing they had a ride the following day, Kat enjoyed their downtime playing cards, packing and repacking their gear, and checking the radio. The Emergency broadcast remained the same. After a quiet day, they retired upstairs for more mind-blowing sex. Kat had never felt voracious before, but for once she didn’t care what her partner thought. Ryan might think she was promiscuous or a sex fiend, but it didn’t matter. She was determined to be herself.

She wanted to feel alive, and this sex accomplished that better than she could have imagined. Ryan had no way of knowing that Mark had considered her a prude. She’d been worried about being judged and had never relaxed enough to ask for what she needed. For once, she wasn’t trying to please anyone else.

Not that the experience hadn’t been pleasurable for both of them. She smiled as she remembered Ryan’s expression the first night at the cabin. He seemed pleased with the new arrangement that included benefits. The sex was freeing and incredible.

Her alarm sounded, and she slipped from the warm bed and across the chilly room into the shower. She was going to bike all day and get sweaty, but she didn’t know when she’d get another chance to enjoy hot water. If she was living in the moment, this was another thing she had to make the most of, even if she hurried. They didn’t have time to fool around with Burt coming in an hour and the cabin to straighten.

It was important to her that they leave the cabin clean and in good condition. When they were ready, Ryan returned the cabin key while Kat watched their stuff. Their loaded bikes waited on the porch where they stood looking at the view. Ash no longer fell from the sky, but the acrid smell of scorched stone remained, so she kept her mask in place. Visibility had improved, but not enough to see across the lake.

It was seven minutes past eight when Burt arrived with a honk. They’d discussed options if he didn’t come, but she was relieved to see him. She wasn’t sure what they’d have done if he hadn’t arrived.

“Morning,” said Burt. “Appreciate you being ready.”

“Did you hear from your daughter?” she asked.

He shook his head. “Not going to worry, probably just the bad phone connections right now. But it doesn’t hurt to check on her myself.”

Ryan loaded the bikes into the bed of the black truck while Kat slung the backpacks against the cab. Burt had attached an angled snow plow blade to the front of his truck and cleared the road as he drove.

. . .

The drive itself was uneventful, and Kat enjoyed sitting instead of cycling to start the morning. Burt knew the roads and had switched to snow tires even though it was late May. Between the plow and the tires, his truck gripped the road, and it took less than thirty minutes to reach the interstate. The highway was empty, other than the odd derelict car at the side with smashed windows covered in white powder.
